Getting Started with Manny

Learn how to access and use Manny, Planera's AI scheduling assistant, to ask questions about your schedule, manage chats, and get more from your project data

Latest Update: 8-6-2026

Manny is Planera's AI scheduling assistant, a Critical Path Method (CPM) expert natively embedded in your project. Ask Manny plain-English questions about your schedule and get quick, accurate answers. Manny can also generate reports, surface risks, and run "what if" scenarios.

How to Access Manny

  1. Log in to Planera at app.planera.io

  2. Open any project as you normally would

  3. Click the launcher button in the bottom right corner of any project page and select Manny in the menu or use the keyboard shortcut (CTRL+M)

  4. If you do not have access to Manny, reach out to your Sales Representative or contact us here

Note: The same icon also gives you access to support, help articles, and the learning center. When clicked, choose Manny to chat, or Get Help for support resources.

Starting and Managing Chats

Start a New Chat

  • Click the + New Chat button at the top right of the Manny panel, or click the drawer icon (top left of the panel) and select + New Chat.

Manage Your Chat History

  • Click the drawer icon (top left of the Manny panel) to open your full chat history for the version you are currently in

  • Chats are automatically titled based on your conversation. You can rename them by hovering over the title, clicking the 3 stacked dots and choosing Rename

  • You can save chats so they are pinned to the top of your list by hovering over the title, clicking the 3 stacked dots and choosing Save

Note: Chats are version-specific, use the copy button to re-run a prompt in a different version

Find Chats from the Project Home Page

On the Home page, alongside the existing comments activity stream, there is a Manny Chats tab. This shows a complete history of all Manny chats you've had across any schedule, all in one place, without needing to open individual projects.

Clicking any chat in this list takes you directly back to the schedule it belongs to and reopens that specific chat, so you can pick up where you left off.

Asking Manny Questions

  • Type your question into the dialogue box at the bottom of the Manny panel, where it says "Ask anything about your project", then press Enter or click the blue up arrow

  • Ask questions naturally, plain English works best

  • For a new or unrelated question, start a fresh chat using the + New Chat button to keep context clean

  • You can edit a prompt you've already sent within a given chat. Editing the message will remove all responses that follow and continue the conversation from there

If the schedule is stale: Manny will display a warning alongside your response to let you know the answer may not reflect the latest schedule data. Always run the schedule before asking Manny questions.

Returning to an older chat: Manny will indicate if the schedule has changed since that conversation was active. Start a new chat to get answers based on the current schedule.

You can also click the Retry icon that appears when hovering at the bottom of an earlier response.

Prompt Library

Organization Level Prompts

When you open a new Manny chat, the empty state shows a Prompt Library curated by the Planera team to help you get started.

Note: If your company has created company specific prompts, you will see those instead of the Planera provided prompts. Admins of your Organization can manage your company specific prompts. Learn more about managing your Organization's Prompt Library here.

  1. The prompt library is organized into categories. To read the full text of the prompt before running it, click the View button. This is a great starting point if you're not sure what to ask or want to explore what Manny can do.

  2. Click Run on any prompt to load it into the chat input, where you can edit it before sending.

Note: For prompts you use often, you can pin those to the top of the prompt library for easy access.

Personal Prompts

Any user with Manny access can create their own personal prompts they can use on any project they are invited to in Planera.

  1. From the Manny chat inside a project, click Browse the Prompt Library

  2. In the upper right hand corner, click Create Personal Prompt

  3. Give your prompt a name, a one-line description, category and the prompt you want to be sent to Manny

  4. Your personal prompts are located, organized by category, in your Prompt Library tagged as Personal

Suggested Follow-Up Questions

After Manny responds, it surfaces suggested follow-up questions as clickable options. Click any suggestion to send it as your next question.

Copy and Download Manny Responses

Manny's responses are often useful outside of Planera. You can copy any Manny response and paste it directly into an email, document, or other tool.

You can also:

  • Download a table to PDF for a clean, shareable copy

  • Download a table as a CSV to open in any spreadsheet software

  • Download a full chat as a PDF, including every question, response, and table

Hyperlinks in a response are preserved when you copy or download it, so colleagues with Planera access can click straight through to the referenced activities.

Applying Manny Results as a Filter

When Manny returns a table or list of activities, you can apply those results directly as a filter in Planera. For tables that have many rows or columns, you can scroll vertically and horizontally within a table.

Notes and Comments

Manny can read the notes and comments attached to activities in your schedule. If you use notes to track blockers, reminders, or alerts, ask Manny to find them and pull them into one list. You also can ask Manny to create and edit notes for you.

For example, you might add a note flagging a blocker, such as an unresolved RFI, or a reminder to check in with a subcontractor four weeks before an activity starts. Ask Manny something like "Look through the comments and notes in this project and create a list of alerts, reminders, and blockers."

Manny returns every activity that has a note, including:

  • The activity ID, name, and type

  • Whether the note is a blocker, reminder, or alert

  • The text of the note

Each item links back to its activity, and you can apply the results as a project filter to quickly find activities with notes.

Note: Manny can read, edit and add comments.

Running Insights with Manny from Progress Updates:

When you clear your progress update list, the empty state offers a shortcut to run a set of pre-built insights against your project:

  1. Clear your progress update list. The empty state shows the option to run Insights with Manny.

  2. Select any combination of the insight options: one, several, or all.

  3. Click "Run with Manny". Each selected insight opens as its own new chat in the chat drawer.

  4. Click into any chat to see the prompt that was sent and Manny's response.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Manny?

Manny is Planera's in-app AI scheduling assistant. It helps you create schedules, understand what's happening in your project, and detect and react to problems, all through plain-English questions.

What does Manny do?

Manny lets you ask natural-language questions about your schedule and get instant answers. You can use it to perform detailed schedule analysis, run "what if" scenario planning, and generate custom reports, making complex scheduling information accessible to everyone on your team.

Is Manny available in all schedules?

Yes. Manny works in both master schedules and field schedules, as long as both Manny and field schedules are enabled for your organization.

How is Manny different from Planera Support or the Help Center?

Manny is contextually aware of your specific project, so it can answer detailed, project-specific questions like "which activities are driving delays" or "what's planned for tomorrow." Planera Support and the Help Center cover general product guidance; Manny answers questions about your actual schedule data.

Does Manny keep track of what I've already asked?

Yes. Your full chat history is saved and accessible from the drawer icon in the top left of the Manny panel. Chats are organized by schedule version, so you can pick up where you left off at any time.

Can I copy or share Manny's answers with others?

Yes. You can copy any Manny response and paste it into an email, document, or other tool. You can also download responses as a PDF. Any hyperlinks in the response are preserved when copied or downloaded, so colleagues with Planera access can navigate directly to the referenced activities.

Can Manny export or generate reports from conversations?

Yes. Manny can generate reports directly from your schedule data. Copy and paste the results into any external tool to easily share them with your team or stakeholders.

Can Manny help me find or filter activities?

Yes. When Manny returns a list or table of activities, you can apply those results directly as a filter in Planera, making it easy to isolate the specific activities you want to focus on.

How do I open Manny?
Click the Manny icon in the bottom right corner of any project page. If the panel shows support options, select Manny from the menu.

Can I have multiple Manny conversations going at once?
You can have many chats in your history, but Manny processes one question at a time per chat. Use the + New Chat button to start separate conversations for different topics.

What happens if I navigate away while Manny is answering?
Manny continues processing in the background. Return to the Manny panel when you're ready, a chime will sound when the response is complete. Note: Refreshing your browser tab, navigating away from Planera to another webpage, or logging out/back in will cause Manny to stop processing.

Why does my chat show a "stale schedule" warning?
This means the schedule has been updated since the chat was opened or last active. Start a new chat to get answers based on the current schedule data.

Can I share Manny responses with teammates who don't have Planera access?
You can copy and paste responses into any external tool. Hyperlinks in the response are preserved, but teammates will need Planera access to follow those links.

Can Manny see the notes on my activities?

Yes. Manny can read the notes attached to activities. Ask it to compile your notes into a list of blockers, reminders, and alerts.

How do I get a list of all my blockers and reminders?

Ask Manny to look through the notes and comments in your project and create a list of alerts, reminders, and blockers. Manny returns each activity with a note, the note type, the note text, and you can apply the list as a project filter.

Can Manny add Notes to an activity for me?

Yes. Ask Manny to add a note, and it will draft the text and ask you to confirm before saving.

Will Manny save a Note without asking me first?

No. Manny always shows you the drafted note and asks for confirmation before saving any change.

Can Manny edit just part of an existing Note?

Yes. Tell Manny which part to change and ask it to leave the rest as is. Manny will confirm the edit before saving.

Can I edit what Manny writes before it saves?

Yes. The confirmation step includes an editable version of the note, so you can adjust the wording before it's saved.

What happens when I run Insights with Manny from an empty progress update list?

Manny starts one new chat per insight you selected, each seeded with a prompt for that insight. You can open any chat to see the prompt and Manny's response.

Can I run more than one insight at a time?

Yes. Select any combination of the four insight options before clicking Run with Manny. Each one runs in its own chat.

Do the insights use my current schedule data?

Yes. Run your schedule first, then use Insights with Manny so the analysis reflects up-to-date data.
