How to Copy Activities and Groups in Canvas

How to copy and paste an activity, milestone, or group

Latest Update: 10-7-2026

You can copy and paste one or more activities or groups (or a mix of them) within the same project or to a different project. You can also copy from a read-only schedule or version, such as a locked company template, and paste into a project you can edit. The read-only source is never changed.

Step 1: Select activities and/or groups:

  1. Click on one activity or group (each called an element)

  2. Select multiple elements by Ctrl/Shift + drawing a box, or Ctrl + Click

Step 2: Copy the elements:

  1. Press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac), or right click and select Copy

Step 3: Paste the elements:

  1. Navigate to any other portion of the project or open a new project.

  2. Press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) to paste these elements

  3. You can also right-click on an empty spot in the Canvas and click on Paste Elements

What properties get copied?

  • Activity and Group names

  • Duration and Calendar

  • Relationships with lags of all elements inside the selection box

  • Labor and Equipment

  • Custom codes (within the same project only; codes are not carried into a different project, including when you copy from a read-only schedule)

PRO TIP:

  • You can create a project called "Recipes" and create a number of small networks that you repeatedly use across your company. Then you can quickly copy from that "Recipes" project and paste it into other projects. Make the "Recipes" project read only to protect it from edits; your team can still copy from it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy activities into a different project?

Select the activities or groups on the Canvas, press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac), open the other project, and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). You can also right-click and use Copy and Paste Elements.

Can I copy from a read-only schedule or template?

Yes. Open the read-only schedule in the Canvas, select what you need, and copy it. You can paste into any project you are able to edit, and the read-only source stays unchanged.

Why can't I cut activities from a read-only schedule?

Cut removes items from the source, and a read-only schedule cannot be changed. Use Copy instead, then paste into the project you want.

What gets copied with my activities and groups?

Names, durations, calendars, labor and equipment, and relationships with lags between the selected items. Custom codes only come along when you paste within the same project.

Why can't I paste into a project?

You need edit rights on the project you are pasting into. If you are a Commenter on that project, ask a project owner or org admin for edit access.
