Latest Update: 8-17-2026
Oracle Primavera P6 has limits to the character count for various fields. When you export a project, we need to stay within that character limit for P6 XML/XER file to be compatible with other products.
Name Type | Character Limit |
Project Name | 120 |
Activity and Task | 120 |
Group Name (WBS) | 100 |
Milestone | 120 |
Name of a Custom Code | 40 |
Options in Custom Code | 60 |
Calendar | 255 |
Activity ID | 40 |
Note: All characters are counted as 1 character, except for the following 5 special characters, which are each counted as 5 characters each: < > & " '
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do character limits matter if I'm not exporting to P6?
These limits exist to keep your project compatible with Oracle Primavera P6's XML/XER format, so if you ever export or exchange data with P6, staying within these limits avoids truncation or compatibility issues.
Do special characters count differently toward the limit?
Yes. Most characters count as 1 character each, but the 5 special characters < > & " ' each count as 5 characters toward the limit.
What is the character limit for an Activity ID versus an Activity Name?
Activity ID is limited to 40 characters, while the Activity Name (and Task name) is limited to 120 characters.
What happens if I exceed a character limit?
Staying within these limits keeps your data compatible when exporting to P6 XML/XER. Exceeding them can cause issues with compatibility in the exported file.
Which field has the highest character limit?
Calendar names have the highest limit at 255 characters.
