Master Schedule vs Field Schedule

This article walks through the differences between these two schedules types and how they relate to each other.

Updated this week

What is a Master Schedule?

The Master Schedule is your primary schedule and often times referred to as the Contract Schedule. This is the foundational scheduling module within Planera and it offers all functionality expected from a full CPM scheduling tool, but much easier to use.

This module can be leveraged for any size of project (up to 15,000 activities) allowing for users to build and manage the schedule, collaborate with team members, assign resources and perform progress updates with full version control.

If the Master Schedule is being actively managed, receiving progress updates with a baseline version assigned, this schedule will be visible in your Organization Level Reporting Dashboards.

What is a Field Schedule?

The Field Schedule is intended for day-to-day planning of individual tasks that may not be reflected in a Master Schedule and it’s longer duration activities.

The Field Schedule can be directly linked to a Master Schedule which allows for users to reflect a portion of the Master Schedule in a separate space to allow for users to plan their day to day tasks without impacting the Master Schedule it is linked to.

Users in the Field Schedule can have visibility of their Master Schedule dates while they plan their work and enter progress updates on tasks and activities. The progress updates performed in a Field Schedule will be visible and available for review in the Master Schedule. Field Schedules will not be visible in Organization Level Reporting Dashboards.

How do Master and Field Schedules Connect?

When creating a new Field Schedule or a new version of a Field Schedule that is linked to a Master Schedule, only the elements of the Master Schedule in the specified period of time will be created in the Field Schedule.

All data and logic associated with those elements will be reflected in the Field Schedule. All changes made to the Field Schedule will remain in the Field Schedule and not impact the structure or dates of the Master Schedule. This includes changes in logic, new activities, deleted activities.

The progress updates performed in a Field Schedule are available for review in the Master Schedule and can be pushed into the Master Schedule update or be overridden.

User permissions between the Master and Field Schedules can be different and a user does not need to have access to the Master Schedule to be invited to the Field Schedule. For example, a trade partner can be invited as a “Contributor” to the Field Schedule and NOT invited at all to the Master Schedule.
