Latest Update: 10-22-2026
Before you can export, make sure you've completed the setup steps here. You'll also need the right folder structure in your Autodesk project so Planera can find your schedules.
Planera exports your schedule as a P6 XER file (.xer), the format Autodesk's Schedule tool reads.
Each export creates a new version of the file in Autodesk Forma (V1, V2, V3...). The Schedule tool always uses the latest version, and your version history stays intact.
After your first export, Planera remembers your hub, project, and schedule selections and pre-fills them next time.
Step 1: Make Sure Your Schedule Folder Exists And Import A Schedule
Planera looks for schedules inside a folder named Schedule tool files, located directly under Project Files in your Autodesk project.
The path must be exactly: Project Files > Schedule tool files
Exact name: The folder must be named exactly "Schedule tool files," with no suffixes, prefixes, extra spaces, or parentheses. Even "Schedule tool files (backup)" won't be detected.
Exact location: The folder must sit directly under Project Files. If it's moved anywhere else, even within the same project, Planera won't find it.
If the folder doesn't exist yet, open your Autodesk project and go to Build > Schedule.
Upload a schedule using one of the approved file types. This automatically creates the
Project Files > Schedule tool files > [Schedule Name]folder. Once the folder exists, Planera will discover it automatically the next time you open the export dialog.
Note: You can export your current schedule file from Planera. Read how to export from Planera here.
Step 2: Export a Schedule from Planera
Open a schedule in Planera.
Click the More menu and select Sync with Autodesk.
In the Export dialog, choose your target using the three dropdowns:
Field | Description |
Autodesk Hub | The Autodesk hub (account). If you have access to multiple hubs, choose the one with your target project. |
Autodesk Project | The Autodesk project within the chosen hub. |
Schedule | The target schedule folder within that project. |
5. Click Sync.
6. Planera uploads the schedule file to your selected folder in Autodesk Files. The Autodesk Schedule tool automatically detects the new file and updates the schedule to the most current version.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Cause | Solution |
"Connection expired" or token error | Your Autodesk connection has expired or been revoked | Go to Org Settings > Integrations > Autodesk and click Connect to Autodesk again |
No schedules found in export dialog | The "Schedule tool files" folder doesn't exist, or is misnamed or misplaced | In Autodesk, confirm the folder is named exactly "Schedule tool files" and sits directly under Project Files. Create a schedule in Autodesk Build if the folder is missing (see Step 1) |
"The connected admin does not have access to this project" (403) | Your Autodesk account doesn't have permission to the selected Autodesk project | Make sure you've been added as a member of the target Autodesk project with Document Management access. Permission changes can take 2-5 minutes to propagate |
Export button is disabled or grayed out | The schedule is stale: it has changes that have not been scheduled yet | Run the schedule, then try exporting again. Planera blocks stale exports so an out-of-date file does not become the newest version in Autodesk |
No projects visible in export dialog | Your Autodesk account has no Autodesk projects, or products aren't activated | Confirm you have active project membership with Build and Docs enabled in Autodesk |
"Autodesk" option not visible in export menu | You haven't connected your Autodesk account yet | Complete the connection steps in [Connecting Planera to Autodesk Construction Cloud] |
Connection lost after clearing browser data | The connection token is stored in your browser | Click Connect to Autodesk again to re-authenticate |
If the Destination Folder Dropdown is Empty
Open the Autodesk project and go to Files.
Check whether a folder named exactly Schedule tool files exists under Project Files.
If it was renamed, rename it back to exactly "Schedule tool files."
If it was moved, move it back so it sits directly under Project Files.
If it doesn't exist, go to Schedule and upload a schedule to auto-generate the folder.
Return to Planera, close and reopen the export dialog. The destination folder you created in Autodesk should now appear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export to projects in different hubs or projects?
Yes. If your Autodesk account has access to multiple hubs, select the hub you need in the export dialog, then choose the project within it.
What file format is exported?
Planera exports in P6 XER format (.xer), the standard format Autodesk's Schedule tool reads.
Can I export to multiple Autodesk projects?
Yes. Each time you export, you can select any hub and project your Autodesk account has access to. Planera remembers your last selection per project for convenience.
Why is the Export to Autodesk option grayed out?
The option is turned off while your schedule is stale, meaning it has changes that haven't been scheduled yet. Run the schedule, then export. This prevents an out-of-date file from becoming the newest version in Autodesk.
Why can't Planera find my schedule folder?
The folder must be named exactly "Schedule tool files" and sit directly under Project Files in your Autodesk project. Any variation in name or location will cause it to be missed. See the troubleshooting steps above.
