Retain WBS Order on Import and Export

Keep your work breakdown structure (WBS) order intact when you export a project to JSON and import it back into Planera.

Latest Update: 6-9-2026

When you export a project to JSON and later import that file, Planera preserves your WBS order. The groups and activities appear in the same order you arranged them, so a project that is round-tripped through JSON, for example when copying a schedule to another workspace, keeps its structure.

  • WBS order is part of your schedule's design, not just a display setting, so it is now kept through a JSON export and import.

  • Previously, a project re-imported from JSON fell back to the default sort, by start date, even when a valid order existed.

  • For P6 files, WBS order is also preserved on import and export. See Importing Projects From P6 and Exporting Projects to P6.

Export a Project to JSON

  1. Open the project and, from the More menu, choose the Export Project

  2. Select Planera JSON from the list of format options

  3. Save the exported JSON file to your computer.

Import a JSON File

  1. From the Planera homepage, click the Import Project button and select your JSON file.

  2. Open the imported project. The WBS groups and activities appear in the same order as the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my WBS order be kept if I export to JSON and import it again?

Yes. Planera now preserves your WBS order through a JSON export and import, so the groups and activities come back in the same order you arranged them.

Why did my WBS order change after re-importing in the past?

Previously, a project brought back in from JSON fell back to the default sort by start date, even when a valid order existed. That is now fixed, and your order is retained.

Does this also apply to P6 files?

Yes. WBS order is preserved when you import from and export to P6. See Importing Projects From P6 and Exporting Projects to P6 for those workflows.
